The goal of a “One-A-Day”
multivitamin is to fulfill an individual’s daily supplement needs with one
tablet/capsule taken “once daily.” This method is nutritionally ineffective
because one’s body requires an input of nutrients throughout the day to
work properly.
Why does your body require more than
one vitamin tablet/capsule a day? Answer: your body works in ‘cycles’. Certain
times of the day are more optimal for nutrient absorption, more specifically the
morning and early afternoon. In addition, your body can not possibly process
all nutrients at one time--if this were true, we would only need to eat once a
day. Instead your body will take in nutrients at its own pace, this pace being
determined by not only one’s metabolism but also by external factors such as how
much one has eaten, one’s state of health, etc.
A ‘one-a-day’ supplement is
beneficial to a certain extent, but as stated previously, your body can not
effectively process all the nutrients at once. The “unprocessed” vitamins will
be discarded in your urine, and you will have wasted both valuable time and
money.
The
optimal supplement strategy is to take a multivitamin at least twice daily
(morning, early afternoon) to maximize nutrient absorption. Your body will ‘get
used to’ this influx of nutrients and slightly change to accommodate the more
balanced spectrum. It is best to take the supplement on a relatively empty
stomach or with a small amount of food if one is sensitive to
supplements—specifically with multivitamins, the less food the better because
your “receptors” will not have competition from larger, undigested food
components.
Most importantly, choosing the RIGHT
kind of multivitamin is key. Multivitamins with Target Release® technology, like
those only manufactured by Intensive Nutrition™, are able to ‘target’ the
most absorptive area of the small intestine and maximize nutrient absorption.
