What are tannins?

The "active ingredients" in Tanalbit® are the "plant tannins", (condensed tannins) natural and powerful substances that act through their agglutinating/astringent effects.  A "tannin" you might be familiar with comes in red wine...it is that biting taste you find in your merlots and cabernets. Another example is the redwood tree. The reason why redwood bark is so resistant to fungus and disease is because of the high "tannin" content of its bark. Tannins are well known for their anti-mycotic properties.

What is the action of Tanalbit®?

Rather than being absorbed by the body, the Tanalbit® tannin complex attaches itself to fungal/yeast/bacterial cells. This "attachment" prevents the unwanted tenants from colonizing and metabolizing, and the unwanted organisms die, exiting the body in the feces. (the body itself "digests" out the Tanalbit®/yeast complex). Initially one may experience constipation/diarrhea due to the removal of unwanted yeast/bacteria, however, this quickly subsides (within 2-3 days). Tanalbit® will actually help diarrhea symptoms because its natural astringency helps to repair permeable and/or weakened GI cells, allowing them to regain their strength, normal activity, and thus also restoring normal peristaltic activity.

Tanalbit® vs. Viracin®: Choosing the right product for you

Both Tanalbit® and Viracin® rely on the astringent and antioxidant properties of plant tannins. Each contain different tannin extracts. Those in Viracin® target bacteria organisms and are active in the stomach. Those in Tanalbit® target yeast/bacteria organisms and are active throughout the GI, especially in the  large intestine and colon. Read below for more information including which product is best for your situation and when using both can be beneficial.
Tanalbit®
  • Tanalbit® complex targets the large intestine due to its combination with the milk protein casein
  • Suggested for yeast/bacteria when entrenched conditions exist (i.e. chronic, persistent problems)
  • Suggested for systemic conditions as Tanalbit® will target the root of the problem (which may end or lessen systemic problems)
  • Suggested as a detoxification agent (heavy metal, allergens) and for food sensitivities
Viracin®
  • Viracin® complex targets the lstomach.
  • Suggested for bacteria and possibly viral organisms in these areas (viral = food or water borne)
  • Suggested when casein allergy present (instead of Tanalbit®) for large intestine issues.
  • Suggested during cold winter months as a scavenger of bacterial organisms
Viracin® and Tanalbit® together
  • When both bacteria and yeast found in stomach and intestine
  • In particularly difficult cases (years of problems)
  • Dosage: 5 caps Tanalbit® + 4 capsules Viracin® daily for 10 weeks

Is Tanalbit® toxic? Are tannins toxic?

The answer is "no" due to the fact that Tanalbit® is composed of condensed tannins rather than free-form tannins. These condensed tannins actually have remarkable antioxidant properties and are not absorbed by the body which means that they work on the lining of the GI to help in its repair. In addition, Tanalbit® is complexed with casein, a purified milk protein, which allows Tanalbit® to directly target the GI tract and mitigate any possible irritation.

The condensed tannins used in Tanalbit® inflict minimal if any effect on the absorption of minerals. Intensive Nutrition® suggests that individuals should take a multivitamin supplement while on a Tanalbit® program.

Tanalbit® and casein, a milk protein (and allergen)

Intensive Nutrition® uses casein in the Tanalbit® formula to act as a potent buffer and aid the proper transport of the Tanalbit® condensed tannin complex to the lower gastrointestinal tract.

The milk protein we use in Tanalbit®, casein, is a purified casein. It has been formulated so that the ingredients that would cause an allergic reaction to protein sensitive individuals, has been removed. Tanalbit® and casein has no effect on lactose-intolerant individuals. *IF YOU ARE CONCERNED ABOUT THE CASEIN IN THIS PRODUCT, DO NOT TAKE THE PRODUCT AND/OR CONSULT YOUR HEALTH PROFESSIONAL AND/OR PHYSICIAN*

Casein will neither cause mycelia overgrowth nor will it exacerbate existing conditions.

Another option for those dealing with bacterial problems only (not fungal or yeast) is to try our
Viracin® product. It does not contain casein.

Zinc and Tanalbit®

The Zinc in Tanalbit® is simply an activator of the complex.   Tanalbit® can not be used as a Zinc supplement due to the fact that Tanalbit ® is not absorbed by the body, and therefore neither will the Zinc. Approximately 5 mg of Zinc is included per capsule.

Tanalbit®, potential side effects and contraindications

Tanalbit® is a non-toxic, herbal supplement.  Tanalbit® works indirectly in the body and so side-effects are very minimal, if any. Some symptoms that some may experience are constipation and nausea and occasionally, die-off. The tannins in the Tanalbit® may cause constipation in some, and if this occurs,  we suggest taking a Magnesium Supplement and/or a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to alleviate constipation and help with digestion, in addition to increasing water intake (by at least 2x's as much).

In cases of nausea, we suggest first eating some food with the dosage, and if this does not help, then reducing the dosage. (AGAIN, please consult your health professional before changing your dosage). According to the PDR for herbal medicine, one of the plant components of Tanalbit®, Quebracho extract, sometimes can cause mild dizziness, nausea or sweats in very sensitive individuals. If this occurs, consider altering your regimen (either by consuming food w/capsule or lowering dosage), and consult your health provider.

Please refer to our contraindications section for more info and precautions.

Tanalbit® and Die-off (aka Herxheimer reaction)

Tanalbit® may occasionally cause die-off, however, the die-off reaction does is usually not severe and it is an indication that the product is working. If you are taking supplements in addition to Tanalbit®, we can not guarantee the effectiveness of Tanalbit® as our tests and dosage recommendations take only Tanalbit® into consideration.

In addition, too many supplements may put an added stress on you system. If you are feeling nauseated or anxious, cut down the Tanalbit® dosage and eat the Tanalbit® with meals. If you are taking multiple supplements, do not exceed 9 capsules of Tanalbit® daily. If you are taking both Tanalbit® and Viracin®, again do not exceed 9 capsules total of both plant tannin supplements. Some individuals do just fine with more, but 9 capsules is usually adequate.

We suggest a gradual build-up to 9 capsules daily but some may prefer 9 capsules right away. If you feel a bit anxious or nauseated, consume the dosage with meals. If this does not work, try dropping the dosage. Give yourself a couple of days to experiment and find what is comfortable for you. As each person is different so to are their needs and sensitivities. Our suggestions are based on average results and feedback we receive from our clients; they are not true for everyone.

Tanalbit® and Dosage Suggestions
Tanalbit ® is best taken before meals, approximately 30 minutes to 1 hour before, or, with a small snack if one cannot tolerate Tanalbit® on an empty stomach. Do not take Tanalbit® after large meals or with other supplements/medications. Allow at least 1 hour between supplements as Tanalbit® needs to work without competition from other supplements / medications. The suggested dosage for Tanalbit® is 2-3 capsules 3 TIMES a day, 9 capsules is optimal. Tanalbit®  works in a gradual manner, and requires YOUR body to eliminate yeast/bacteria + Tanalbit® complex  (hence the need for a larger dosage as well as a regimen that works throughout the day instead of all at once).

Our clients have found that the best results occur when an individual takes Tanalbit® dosage approximately 30 minutes before consuming a meal. However, to avoid possible nausea caused by "floating capsules in an empty stomach" syndrome, a person should do so with a light meal or snack.  Suggestion:  handful of brazil nuts.  If an individual has a particularly sensitive GI, it is better to take the Tanalbit® with a small meal or light snack.

A person who suffers from a yeast/fungal problmes should in any case already be following a strict diet regimen.  Some basic rules: avoid sugar, refined carbohydrates and citrus. See our cookbook product, "So What can I eat?" For some dietary guidelines. In addition, we suggest using TanFlora® probiotic with a Tanalbit® program. Take TanFlora® 30 minutes to 1 hour separately from Tanalbit®.

Maintenance Program
Intensive Nutrition® recommends that an individual follow a nine capsule a day regimen.  (3 capsules, 3 times a day) ---However, we stress that you follow your health provider's advice first and foremost! Please remember that this is only a suggestion, not a prescription, and based on the use of Tanalbit® ALONE---After a period of between 4-6 weeks, one should not stop taking Tanalbit®  but rather begin a "maintenance program"  of at least 4 weeks (more or less depending on initial dosage).  The calendar below shows the dosage for a person taking nine capsules a day. Similar reduction of one capsule per week is suggested.
