What is prostate
enlargement or BPH (Benign Prosatic Hyperplasia) and what
are its symptoms?
BPH is the enlargement of the
prostate gland and occurs most commonly in middle-aged and
elderly men. It is believed that enlargement is caused
by the change in androgen (testosterone and related
hormones) concentration profiles after the age of 40. BPH is most commonly characterized by urinary
hesitancy, painful urination, nocturia (nocturnal and
frequent urination) weak urinary stream, prolonged and/or
incomplete bladder emptying.
At least
half of all men over the age of 50 report some sort of
problem with their prostate. The incidence of an enlarged
prostate increases from 8% in men ages 31-40 to 40-50% in
men agest 51-60 and greater than 80% in men 80 years of age
